What is a sitz?

A sitz is effectively a gathering of musicians and singers to work on the music and songs from one of the many amazing shows from the musical theatre world. It is all done in private, so no pressure or performance anxiety from a packed theatre. It's a wonderful musical opportunity for talented individuals to come together and enjoy some excellent music making.

Who is this for?

Anyone can take part from professionals and students to amateurs, an interest in the musical theatre, however, is a pre-requisite. A sitz, like an orchestral play day, is a great opportunity to improve your sight reading and singing skills. 
 

N.B. Participants should be over the age 18.

Applying to take part

There are are three sign up forms at the bottom of the information list on this page of the website and the musical director will keep applications open up to and including Saturday 2 May 2026.

The name of the show cannot be disclosed, but once you are signed up and on the mailing list, we will be able to share that information with you!

What are the costs?

The cost for the sitz is £30, which covers  all fees for our musical director, venue and music hire and break time refreshments.

Where will this take place?

Here are the some key logistical bits of information:

Venue: Harpenden Trust Halls, 130A Southdown Road, Harpenden, AL5 1PU

Dates: Saturday 30 May 2026 Please be advised that this the updated date.

Times: 10:00 - 19:00 (Musicians/Band Required from c. 12:45)

Rehearsal Schedule: This will be shared with participants once places have been confirmed.

Musical Director: Russell Scott

Some players and singers might wish to frequent a local pub or restaurant at the end of the day!

Social Media

It will be great for you to share photos of the rehearsals on your social media platforms. However, you will not be able to use the name of the show or hint at any of the creative teams associated with the musical that we will be working with. These are conditions imposed upon us running a Sitz, so must be respected!

Orchestration and Voices/Music

Voices - SATB for the Ensemble and male and female soloists (please see the sign up forms for how to express interest to be a soloist)

Orchestra - please see the sign up forms for more details on the orchestration and wind and brass parts will require some doubling. 

N.B. Some chairs might be doubled, but you can be added to a reserves list. If you have any questions about the doubles, please get in touch.

Music - it might be possible to distribute music in advance of the sitz, but this will be confirmed in due course with the publisher/rights holders.
